I’ve been a fan of old men who stay badass well into their old age ever since 1986 when I saw the movie Tough Guys with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. It was a comedy about two old men, ex cons, who were still tough enough to lift weights and beat people up. I loved the concept, and it stayed with me all the way to today. It might explain part of my love for the Expendables movies. (And hell, in just 18 years I’ll be 60 years old myself.)
Two things lately. First, Mickey Rourke at age 62 won a boxing match against a 29 year-old opponent. He trained and lost 35 pounds to prep for the fight. I realize it’s only an exhibition fight, but still. Pretty cool. How many 62 year-old guys do you know who can buff up and lose 35 pounds to enter the boxing ring?
Second, Christopher Lee, the 92 year-old actor who is Saurman in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies and Count Dooku in the Star Wars films, regularly puts out heavy metal albums. How cool is that? Here’s his latest Christmas album:
Sound like shit? Maybe. Doesn’t matter. If I’m beating up guys half my age in boxing matches while in my 60s and making heavy metal music in my 90s, I’d say that’s a win.
